On Wednesday, we celebrated Josiah's belated 5th birthday party with his friends. The theme was Space Grizzlies and Castles, inspired by the book, The Berenstain Bears and the Bad Dream.
The cake was constructed using chocolate cake: two 9" rounds and the topper which was baked in a Pyrex mixing bowl. The spires and towers are constructed from ice cream cones (regular cups and sugar cones) lovingly carved then covered and glued together using melted dipping chocolate (which then hardened).
The central cap, backing Sleazo is a waffle cone purchased from a local ice cream establishment. The stairway incorporates Little Debbie (Banana) Marshmallow Pies* bordered by the inverted bottom halves of regular sugar/waffle cones.
The overall design is inspired by a picture of Sleazo's castle from the story.
Josiah and his friends had fun during craft time, building their own Space Grizzlies using Crayola air-dry modeling foam and various extras like feathers and beads.
* Banana Marshmallow Pies: "Two crunchy cookies with a layer of marshmallow. Coated in flavored banana icing. Individually wrapped eight to a carton." Ack! The boys think they're delicious!

What an incredible castle cake! I used to love to read Bernstein Bear books and I remember the space grizzlies, too! Sounds like a fun party with a craft and a great birthday boy! And those Banana Marshmallow Pies don't sound so good - they really like them? Well, they worked really well for the stairway! Awesome - thanks for the photos. Love, K (and D & A too)
